Bus drivers threaten strike over safety rules
The latest strike action has come after more than 20 hours of negotiations in what has been the longest working week in the union's history. Workers in the plant in Goulburn say they will strike on July 28 if a plan approved by management does not become law by then.
A third strike is planned for Tuesday, but it is believed that the strike won't last that long.
Goulburn resident Stephen Smith, 28, said the strike would be the first walkout of its kind in Australia.
The Victorian union representative, who does not speak with the radio station, said he did not expect any further action or demands for compensation, saying they were part of a "remedy".
He believes a "crisis" has existed in Australian workplaces for years as workers struggle for improved working conditions and protection.
"This is about the future of the job in Goulburn," Mr Smith said, adding that the company's "abysmal" management was an "existential crisis".
Mr Smith also said the company had "aborted" a strike that broke out in October last year after one week of strike action.
On Thursday, the company, which pays its workers about $60,000 a year, announced an investigation into "inappropriate" employee communications over the past year.
According to Mr Smith, the company had offered a $100,000 offer at the end of October, but that was rescinded on Friday by management.
"It's pretty bad. I don't know what they expect," Mr Smith said.
"We have no way of knowing what's going to happen. They're going to say, 'well, it's fine, we're going to do what we want'. That's a problem. They're not listening. We're just going on strike."
One Goulburn staff member, who did not want to be named, said: "It's the longest strike they've had. We're pretty upset with how things are going with the workers. There's not a lot that we can do about the company.
"We want something done to change the policies and management have not done anything."
Goulburn spokesman John Laidlaw said the company had been fully informed of the strike and the union would continue to be "in the loop".
"Our company is committed to working towards a solution for our workers, who are a highly valued asset of our business. That is why we were able to provide them with the necessary information before they agreed to a strike."
However, Mr Laidlaw said the company had already provided "guidance to its Goulburn workforce".
